“Climate Parents” on Democracy Now!
My Newsweek/DailyBeast story led to an appearance on Democracy Now! to discuss the urgency of parents joining the fight against climate change; see http://www.democracynow.org/2012/7/20/climate_parents_for_kids_future_mark/. You can join too at http://www.climateparents.org/.

Thank you very much for all that you are doing to bring attention to this topic. I, too, have a 7-year-old daughter and it wasn’t until she was born that I really started paying attention to climate change and its effects. Since then I have read enough to understand the science behind climate change, the effects it is currently having, and its likely future effects, but very rarely do I read about how we will need to adapt to this new planet and what skills will be important. I share with my daughter the realities of climate change in terms she can understand, and we do what we can in our household to save energy, eat locally, and live sustainably, but I want to do more in that I want to teach her skills that will benefit her during her lifetime to help her cope with this new environmental reality. I realize there is much we don’t know about what the future will bring, but we need to start somewhere with our children instead of denying or making light of the situation. I, too, worry constantly about my child’s future, but I also will not let that fear paralyze me. With guidance from parents like you, I want to equip my child with practical tools for her future.
Thanks, Laura. I hope you’ll sign up to join Climate Parents (go to http://www.climateparents.org/) and get involved with working to get our political and business leaders to take serious action about the climate threat. As for practical tools, you might start by reading my recent book, HOT: Living Through the Next Fifty Years on Earth, which was written precisely to figure out how my daughter and the rest of what I call Generation Hot can cope with the climate challenge.
Thanks again,
Mark H
